The Bucks (59-20) lead the way, as they have done for almost all of the season, in the Eastern Conference, and with their win over the Philadelphia 76ers on Thursday, clinched the No 1 seed for the postseason to ensure homecourt advantage throughout the playoffs.

After missing a game due to an ankle knock, star man Giannis Antetokounmpo returned with impact on Monday night, pouring in 28 points, including 14 in the fourth quarter, as the Bucks pulled away to defeat the Nets 131-121 at Barclays Center in Brooklyn.

Antetokounmpo backed that up with another stunning performance against the Sixers, as he scored 45 points in a playoff-type atmosphere to lead his team to a statement victory in Philadelphia.

Along with James Harden, Antetokounmpo the co-favourite for the regular season Most Valuable Player award. His season averages of 27.7 points, 12.5 rebounds, 5.9 assists, 1.3 steals and 1.5 blocks illustrate the impact he has had at both ends of the floor for Milwaukee.

The ‘Greek Freak’ is the foundation of the Bucks’ fourth-ranked offense (113.8 points scored per 100 possessions) and league-leading defense (104.8 points allowed per 100 possessions).

The Nets (39-40) remain the East’s feelgood story. Without a superstar leader, no one predicted the run they made into the playoff places – especially when they lost their best player, Caris LaVert, to a serious leg injury earlier in the season.

With a handful of games to go, they are clinging onto that postseason berth, despite a horrifically-tough schedule to finish the campaign. If results go their way, they could still jump the Orlando Magic for the sixth seed. However, a run of defeats could see them fall below the Detroit Pistons and Miami Heat and miss the playoffs entirely.

The Nets’ boast a roster of exciting young players, several of whom are legitimate contenders for this year’s Most Improved Player award. Leading the way is point guard D’Angelo Russell, deemed surplus to requirements by the Los Angeles Lakers when they drafted Lonzo Ball, but now averaging 21.1 points and 6.9 assists per game in Brooklyn.

Center Jarrett Allen and bench scorer Spencer Dinwiddie have also caught the eye this season while All-Star Three-Point Contest winner Joe Harris is always dangerous from the perimeter.
