Amazon devices are super cheap

Amazon has slashed the prices on many of its own devices, just as it does every year. That means you can pick up everything from an Echo Dot to a Fire Tablet to a Kindle for a lot less than usual.

The best deals include an Echo Dot (4th Gen) for £19.99, a Fire TV Stick for £22.99, a Fire Tablet 7 for £31.99 and a Kindle Paperwhite for £94.99

Some of these devices have been cheaper before, but not by much and it's worth noting that both the Fire 7 and Paperwhite are now at their cheapest prices ever

Amazon Smart Plug: was £24.99 now £12.99 at Amazon
Even if you don’t have a house full of smart devices, this handy little gadget from Amazon can add smart capabilities to attached tech such as timers, schedules and voice controls. It also works great with other Alexa devices such as the Echo Dot or Echo Show. Now half-price – it’s a super useful and cheap addition to your shopping cart.View Deal

Echo Dot (4th Gen): was £49.99 now £19.99 at Amazon
Amazon’s previous generation Echo Dot smart speaker is back on sale with a £30 saving – that makes it the cheapest we’ve seen it. In our Echo Dot review, we found it to be reasonably loud and a cheap way to get some smart home tech. You can use it to control your smart home setup, as well as play music, check the weather, set timers, and more, all with simple voice commands.View Deal

Echo Dot (5th Gen): was £54.99 now £26.99 at Amazon
The latest generation Echo Dot smart speaker offers a step up in audio quality to deliver clearer vocals, more powerful bass and a more vibrant sound overall. Apart from that, it’s capable of exactly the same features as previous models, so it’s up to you whether it’s worth paying the extra £7. It is the first time the brand-new Echo Dot has been on sale since launch, though, so it’s a rare deal.View Deal

Ring Video Doorbell 3: was £159.99 now £109.99 at Amazon
This upgraded version of the Ring Video Doorbell comes with improved wireless connectivity and better motion detection – but otherwise is the same as the standard wireless version. This is Amazon’s cheapest and most basic streaming stick. Get the excellent Nest Mini smart speaker for just £20

Alex Whitelock, Deals Editor, TechRadar

The official Google Store launched its Black Fridays sale in the UK last week, and it's offering up the fantastic Nest Mini smart speaker for just £20.

This is the lowest price yet for the budget smart speaker, and a deal that's well under half-price – considering it usually retails for £49. Overall, while we're quite in the loose-change pocket money range here, we're definitely in bargain territory, especially if you're looking for a smart home-related gift.

At £20, this is a fairly cheap way to kick-start your smart home setup. You could, for example, purchase a couple of devices and place them throughout your house, making use of the myriad Google Assistant voice functions to control your lights, TV, or other smart-compatible devices.

Where and why did Black Friday start?

Black Friday feels like it's been around forever. But where it did all start? And where did that name come from?

Well, the first known mention of Black Friday related to this shopping experience was in November 1951, when the journal Factory Management and Maintenance used it to describe people calling in sick the day after Thanksgiving so they could have an extra day off work.

Around this time, police in the US were using the phrases “Black Friday” and “Black Saturday” to describe the horrendous traffic that occurred at the beginning of the pre-Christmas shopping season.

It wasn't until 1961 that there was a movement from the local government to change the shopping season to “Big Friday” and “Big Saturday”. Clearly, that never caught on.

It wasn't until much later that the notion that Black Friday was the time when retailers moved 'back into the black' became the leading thought and it was clearly an attempt to bring positivity to the term.

Oculus Quest 2 is cheaper – but could drop again

Meta's Black Friday deals have gone live and there are some decent prices on the VR headset, which we gave 4.5/5 stars in our Oculus Quest 2 review. The discounts don't quite bring the headset back down to the lowest price we've ever seen (£299 in August), but the added games are good value.

Oculus Quest 2 (128 GB) Black Friday bundle: was £452.99 now £349.99 at Amazon
In our four-and-a-half-star review, we celebrated the Oculus Quest 2’s easy to use design, as well as its good visuals and specs (especially for its price). This deal doesn’t make it as cheap as it used to be (£299 before a price hike) but it’s still an amazing bundle offer that includes a lot of bang for your buck.View Deal

Oculus Quest 2 (256 GB) Black Friday bundle: was $552.99 now £429.99 at Amazon
This version of the Oculus Quest 2 bundle includes the same great games and VR headset, except it comes with more storage (256GB instead of 128GB). Admittedly, you don’t need this much space unless you plan to download a lot (and we really mean a lot) of VR games, but if you want to go all-in on the metaverse this bundle could be perfect for you.View Deal

The Oculus Quest 2 is one of the best VR headsets around, especially if you're on a budget. While it's not as impressive as the Valve Index in terms of specs, or normally as cheap as the Pico 4, Meta's device has more than a few things going for it.

First, unlike the Index, Meta's headset is standalone. If you want to connect it to a PC you can but to play a VR game you don't have to. You also don't need to set up any annoying towers in the real world either, you just have to clear a space and draw a quick outline once you put the headset on so it knows where is safe and you're ready to go.

Secondly, while the Pico 4 is normally slightly cheaper at £379 (it's only available in the UK) and comes with slightly better specs, its software is definitely inferior right now. Generally, the Pico OS doesn't feel as fine-tuned as what Meta's hardware runs on and the games on the Pico 4 aren't as good as those on the Quest platform. Not only does it lack great titles like Beat Saber and Resident Evil 4 VR, but the Pico 4's version of games like After the Fall and Walkabout Mini Golf lack content that's available on the rival hardware.

Need batteries?

This 12-pack of Duracell AA batteries is an Amazon best-seller today. But they cost £7.13 at Amazon (down from £14.50) – whereas we've found them at Argos for £4.90 today.

You'll probably have to collect them, mind, if you get them at Argos – and not all stores have them in stock – but if you're looking to save money, it's a cracking price and worth seeing if they're available near you.

(Or you can just buy them at Amazon for £7.13 – which is still cheaper than Tesco – and have them delivered.)

But come Christmas, you’ll be grateful that you picked up this 12-pack of Duracell Plus AAs, and for half the price we’re seeing at other retailers. View Deal

Duracell Plus AA Alkaline Batteries, 12-pack: was £14.50 now £7.50 at Amazon
If the Argos deal isn’t working for you, Amazon has the next best price today: £7.50 (they’re £8 at Tesco if you have a clubcard). That’s about 50p more than we’ve seen them drop to before (in May), but inflation has kicked in since then so we’re not sure whether they’ll drop again. You can save even more on larger packs, too. View Deal

Black Friday deals – are they legit?

James Pickard, Deals Editor, TechRadar

I've been covering Black Friday for a number of years now, and one of the big points of debate each time is whether the deals during the sale are really as good as they seem. Unfortunately, there's no simple answer.

In a lot of cases, there are some genuinely good Black Friday deals now, including many big and popular products that have dropped to their lowest prices of the year. I use various price-tracking apps to monitor these top sellers, and track many manually too, and that means I can say with almost 100% certainty whether a specific item has been cheaper before.

However, there are definitely times when a bit of retailer trickery leads to some less-than-stellar deals. As with any sales event, you’ll see a mixture of bargains, discounted end-of-line stock and strange things found in the back of a warehouse somewhere. Sometimes, you have to sift through that to uncover the gems.

But that's also why we're here. Now that Black Friday's in full swing, it's important to know that we've carefully considered the deals we're sharing based on product quality, price history and how interesting we think they'll be to you. It's something we do all year-round anyway to bring you the top bargains.

Black Friday TV Deals 2022

9 of the best Black Friday TV deals

Matt Bolton, Managing Editor, TechRadar

Black Friday TV deals arrived early this year, thanks to sales from shops including Amazon, Currys and John Lewis. This weekend there are super-low prices on a wide range of TVs – everything from premium OLED and QLED displays and huge 75-inch sets right through to budget and small smart TVs. Here are some of our top picks.

See more Black Friday TV deals in our round up.

Black Friday TV deals: quick links

7 of the best Black Friday deals on TVs

1. TCL 32S5209 32-inch HDR TV: was £199 now £149 at Amazon
Lots of 32-inch TVs have to do without the tech that makes bigger TVs great, but not this one. You get Android smart TV and HDR support, so it’s easy to find things to watch, and they look better once you do. With these specs, £150 is a very competitive price – the 25% discount is about as good as it gets for TVs this cheap, anyway.View Deal

2. Hisense A6BG 50-inch 4K LED TV: was £499 now £299 at Amazon
Few other brands can compete with Hisense when it comes to balancing budget with features and functionality. This 2022 50-inch 4K TV comes with Dolby Vision HDR for you to enjoy Netflix and Disney Plus movies at their best, all from and an intuitive smart TV interface. The fact that 50 inches worth of TV is less than £300 is an incredible early Black Friday deal.  View Deal

3. Hisense 65-inch A6BG series 4K TV: was £799 now £448 at Amazon
A £300 price cut makes this Hisense 4K TV a good deal indeed for anyone looking to step up to the 65-inch size range on the cheap. Along with 4K resolution, it offers Dolby Vision HDR and DTS Virtual:X sound for a more immersive experience. Built-in Alexa will let you control the TV using voice commands and there’s also Hisense’s own VIDAA smart interface onboard for streaming.View Deal

4. LG A2 65-inch OLED 4K TV: was £1,699 now £1,299 at Currys
This is the cheapest 65-inch OLED available, so if you want the rich cinematic contrast of this premium screen tech for less, the A2 is ideal. To make it this price, it features less advanced processing than the LG C2, a less bright screen, and no HDMI 2.1 ports for next-gen gaming. But the precise colours and rich HDR are here – for movie lovers looking for high-end pictures for a mid-range price, it’s excellent.View Deal

NOW OUT OF STOCK
TCL 65C635K 65-inch QLED Television
was £699 now £549 at Amazon
If you’re looking for a widescreen Smart TV purchase that won’t break the bank, this deal is the one for you. It only offers a 21% discount, which doesn’t seem like much – and it might come down further in price as Black Friday approaches. Even so, with 4K HDR resolution, QLED Quantum dot color, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth and HDMI support, built-in Free View, and Android TV containing all of your favorite streaming services, you’ll do well to find a better TV deal right now. View Deal

5. Samsung BU8000 75-inch 4K TV: was £1,399 now £999 at Amazon
A 75-inch TV for under £1000? What’s not to love. The Samsung BU8000 obviously doesn’t have quite the vibrancy of Samsung higher-priced QLED TVs, but this is an exceptionally fair trade off for this much TV real estate for less than a grand – especially as Samsung delivers some of the best budget bang for buck around. The BU8000 has solid upscaling and virtual 3D surround sound. There’s no HDMI 2.1 for new-gen gaming but ALLM is on hand to help with ultra low lag.View Deal

6. LG 55-inch CS series 4K OLED TV: was £1,499 now £949.00 at Amazon
At just £949, this is a great Amazon Black Friday deal on LG’s CS series OLED TV, which is basically the LG C2 but with the panel and design of LG C1. The set sports the company’s latest a9 Gen 5 AI Processor, and it has support for Dolby Vision IQ HDR and Dolby Atmos sound. With a native 120Hz display, it’s also a great option for gaming, and LG packs in VRR, ALLM, G-SYNC, and AMD FreeSync Premium to round out the set’s gamer-friendly features.View Deal

7. Philips PUS807 50-inch LED 4K HDR TV : was £679 now £549 at Currys
If you’ve always had an eye on the bright LEDs of Philips’ Ambilight system, this 50-inch LED TV might be right up your colour-changing street. For just over £500 you’re getting 3 sides of Ambilight that will match the action on screen, and just like most Philips TVs you can make the most of every HDR format for all of your streaming services, including Dolby Vision and HDR10+. There are even two HDMI 2.1 ports for new-gen gaming at 120Hz – that’s incredibly rare at this price.

8. LG 55-inch QNED816 4K TV: was £1,149 now £699 at Amazon
A 39% price cut on this LG 55-inch QNED TV gives gamers an opportunity to scoop up a cheap but great TV to use with their PS5. QNED is LG’s way of saying the set has quantum dots for enhanced colour, and it also supports 4K 120Hz video input and VRR. LG’s webOS platform provides the streaming smarts, and you can also control the TV via Google Assistant and Alexa voice commands.View Deal

9. LG C2 48-inch OLED TV: was £1,399 now £949 at Amazon
The world’s best TV for most people (according to our review) hits its cheapest-ever price for one day thanks to an extra £100 off voucher, but now it’s back to £949. We don’t know whether that price will return, but this is the best we’ve seen for it otherwise. It’s a wonderful OLED TV, and is totally future-proofed, thanks to its great smart TV software and four advanced HDMI 2.1 port.View Deal

When does Black Friday start?

It's late November and there are Black Friday 2022 ads everywhere. But when does Black Friday actually start? Is it already running?

Black Friday doesn’t officially start until November 25 – this coming Friday. But in many ways Black Friday has started. There's a huge influx of Black Friday deals already, and the annual sales event is in full swing at most major retailers.

It's fair to say that we're now deep into peak discount season. The best deals of the year used to appear on Black Friday itself, but that's now no longer the case. Last year, most of the biggest offers launched in the seven days leading up to Black Friday – and then remained relatively static as we moved through Black Friday weekend into Cyber Monday

In fact, there were very few new deals in many of the largest product categories on either Black Friday or Cyber Monday last year – and some of the best offers from earlier in the month didn't return. That's a trend we expect to see again this year.

From today, then, our advice is to keep your eyes peeled. We're seeing some serious Black Friday deals now – so if you see a great saving on a product you’ve had your eye on in the coming days, we recommed grabbing it.

What to consider when buying an air fryer

Air fryers are hot products this year, there's no doubt about that. They cook lots of foods faster and are cheaper to run than a traditional oven, so may help lower your household bills. But there are loads to choose between. So how do you pick the right one?

We'll share our top three air fryers in a moment – in the meantime, here are some key considerations from our Homes Editor Jenny Oksien.

Basket air fryers tend to be healthier because they funnel the juices, as well as the fat, away from the food but you can’t check on the food without opening them and letting cold air in, which can stall the cooking process.

Bowl air fryers, however, have glass lids so you can keep an eye on your meal, but the cooking juices remain in the air fryer and in contact with the food, making it tastier but not as healthy.

Check the capacity of the air fryer. If you’re feeding four or more mouths, look for larger air fryers, which can hold around 6.5 quarts / 6 liters, while couples will find designs that have a capacity of around 2.5 quarts / 2.5 liters will be sufficient. Some of the best air fryers also have more than one compartment, which means you can cook multiple foods at the same time.

3 of the best air fryers – our top picks

If you're wondering which air fryer to choose out of the thousands that are available, we're here to help. Here are three of the best air fryers we've tested…

The Instant Vortex Plus 6-in-1 Air Fryer is probably the best air fryer for most people: its performance is great – it consistently turned out the crispiest fries and chicken wings of any air fryers we tested – and it's fairly priced at under £150 for the 5.7L model.

The Cosori Pro is a little cheaper; or if you want to go all out, The Ninja Foodie is our premium pick – it has two separate compartments, so you can cook two different dishes at the same time. Handy.

And if you don't care about the best models – you just want the biggest saving – you'll find all the best Black Friday air dryer deals in our full round up.

The Instant Vortex Plus 6-in-1 Air Fryer with ClearCook & OdourErase on a white background

1. Instant Vortex Plus 6-in-1 Air Fryer with ClearCook & OdourErase

The best air fryer overall

Style: Basket fryer | Wattage: 1700W | Capacity: 6 quart / 5.7-liter | Cooking modes: Air-fry, roast, bake, reheat, broil and dehydrate

Crisp, evenly browned results
Window to check on food
Reduces cooking smells
Display gets fingerprint marks

The brand behind the iconic Instant Pot also makes air fryers, and its top-of-the-range model consistently turned out the crispiest fries and chicken wings of any air fryers we tested. In our testing, the fries had crisp exteriors but soft, fluffy insides, and the chicken was moist, while its skin was crispy and retained loads of flavor.

The Instant Vortex Plus 6-in-1 Air Fryer with ClearCook & OdourErase builds on the previous iteration, the Instant Vortex Plus, with a plastic window in the basket, and a light, that lets you keep an eye on food while it's cooking, and has a built-in filter to reduce smells too.

However, it doesn't come with any cooking charts, which means you will need to spend time experimenting to achieve the right cooking duration and temperature, particularly when it comes to frozen food. We also found the crisper plate falls out if the basket is tipped up too much when removing food, and the display suffers from fingerprint marks. However, these are minor gripes on what is in our eyes, the best air fryer on the market right now.

Cosori Pro LE Air Fryer L501 on a white background

2. Cosori Pro LE Air Fryer L501

The best budget air fryer

Style: Basket fryer | Wattage: 1500W | Capacity: 5-quart / 4.7-liter capacity | Cooking modes: Air fry

Crisp fries and chicken wings
Sleek, minimalist design
Seven presets
Struggles with frozen foods
Needs some experimentation

If you want a budget-friendly air fryer that's as stylish as it is effective, then the Cosori Pro LE Air Fryer L501 is worth considering. Unlike any of the air fryers we’ve tested previously, the LED and touch control panel is located on the glossy top of this kitchen gadget creating a streamlined look.

On test, we found the air fryer produced crisp, crunchy fries with soft, fluffy potato inside and succulent juicy chicken wings. However, it struggled to evenly brown foods, so we found ourselves tweaking cooking times, and it wasn't effective when cooking frozen foods either.

It has seven presets for dishes such as bacon, seafood, and cake. It also has a reminder to shake, which can be activated when setting the cooking time that will alert you halfway through cooking so you can turn the food to achieve an even crisp.

The Ninja Foodi Max dual zone air fryer AF400UK on a white background

3. Ninja Foodi Max Dual Zone Air Fryer AF400

The best premium air fryer

Style: Twin basket fryer | Wattage: 2470W | Capacity: 10-quart / 9.5 liter | Cooking modes: Air-fry, roast, bake, reheat and dehydrate

Dual zones
Large capacity
Many cooking methods
Bulky
No reminder to turn

This air fryer has two separate compartments, so you can cook two different dishes so they’re ready to serve at the same time. In our review, we were impressed at just how quickly the air fryer crisped and evenly browned our fries.

The two cooking drawers, which have crisper plates inside, have an overall capacity of 10-quart / 9.5 liter and are deep enough to hold a 3lb / 1.4kg batch of fries or 4.4lb / 2kg chicken each. Ninja also offers a smaller capacity version, which holds up to 8-quart / 7.6 liters and is known as the Ninja Foodi Dual Zone Air Fryer AF300.

This handy kitchen gadget can roast, dehydrate, bake and even reheat, as well as air fry, although, like most air fryers, the reheat function can't replace a microwave. We were impressed that different cooking methods can be employed in each compartment at the same time and the ‘sync’ feature ensures both compartments finish cooking at the same time, so you’ll never be waiting around for one part of your meal to finish cooking.

It is one of the bulkier air fryers we’ve tested and it does take up a significant chunk of space on a worktop. However, it looks pretty stylish combining a glossy black finish with silver accents.

There are a few Black Friday iPad deals around today – but not many

Good Black Friday iPad deals were few and far between last year. Today, there still aren't many we want to draw your attention to yet – except these three, which are worth a look.

Apple iPad 10.2 (2021):  was £369 now £309 at Amazon
If you’re looking for an Apple tablet on a budget, consider picking up the latest iPad 10.2 on sale for £309 at Amazon – just £10 more than the record-low price. With a great Retina Display, speedy A13 Bionic chip, and expanded 64GB of storage, the latest 2021 iPad is a great choice if you’re looking for an all-rounder that doesn’t break the bank. For shopping, browsing, streaming, and gaming, it’s more than enough for most users.View Deal

iPad (2021): was £549 now £424.99 at Amazon
Despite the arrival of the tenth-generation iPad, Apple continues to sell its 2021 predecessor, however, in practically every market outside the US, Apple increased the price of the ninth-generation model; making this early November 23% Black Friday reduction on the 256GB, WiFi-only variant a notable deal. View Deal

iPad Air (2022): was £1,029 now £869 at Amazon
Apple’s latest iPad Air fixes the shortcomings of its predecessor and serves up laptop-class M1 power too. This Amazon deal pushes the price of the 256GB cellular model down to only £20 more than the price of the WiFi-only version. 7 alternative Airpod deals

Becky Scarrott, senior audio staff writer, TechRadar

When it comes to earbuds, there's Apple's AirPods, and then there's everyone else. But this year's Black Friday Apple AirPods deals haven't been that great yet – they've been good, but not jaw-dropping.

So these are the AirPods alternatives we want to steer you towards. (But if you'd prefer a Black Friday headphones deal, we've got those too – and our extensive roundup of Black Friday earbuds deals is already live.)

1. Sony LinkBuds S earbuds: was £180 now £119 at Amazon
Exceptionally small, light, comfortable earpieces with a great control app plus a slew of well-implemented on-ear control options. They’re not the most dynamic or zealous listen we’ve ever heard, but for this money the sound is still up there with the best in show. They’re currently 34% off, and although we briefly (very briefly) saw them dip to one penny below £100 in October, at this price they’re a solid bet from a trusted name in audio – particularly if you have smaller ears.

4. Sony WF-C500 true wireless earbuds: was £90 now £49 at Amazon
Under intense review, we called these Sony earbuds “great value for money” – but that was at the full asking price. With 45% off, we think they’re an absolute steal and then some. Yes, 20 hours of battery can be bettered – but 10 hours from the buds alone certainly can’t at this new low price-point. They’re also light and comfortable, providing an exciting, musical sound. Oh, and we’ve never seen them this cheap – until now. View Deal

5. Echo Buds (2nd gen): was £109.99 now £59.99 at Amazon
A 45% saving from Amazon on its own second-generation set of true wireless earbuds! The newest May 2021 Amazon Echo Buds are smaller, lighter, and boast double the ambient noise cancellation of the originals. As long as the five hour (plus 10 hours in the case) battery life doesn’t put you off, there’s an awful lot to like here for this kind of money – and to be clear, this deal represents an all-new lowest-seen price… View Deal

7. Jabra Elite 85t earbuds: was £219 now £143.31 at Amazon
Save £50.99 –
Amazon has slashed the price of the Jabra Elite 85t true wireless earbuds, thus bettering their lowest-ever price. Yes, ever! Available in 5 different colours and the recipient of a highly respectable four-star review from this publication, not only are the Jabra Elite 85t a stylish pair of earbuds, but they also provide excellent audio performance, effective noise cancellation and are a great alternative to Airpods.  View Deal

Silentnight Comfort Control Electric Blanket: was £60 now from £35 at Amazon
Best overall – This electric blanket from Silentnight comes in three sizes: single, double and king, each with varying discounts. You can also pay a little more for two additional versions – one gives you dual control for £57 (ideal if you have different preferences to your partner) and the other is made from ‘extra fluffy’ fleece for extra comfort (from £69). There’s a chance the price of all three versions will drop in the coming days – we saw the basic version for around £23 in February/March. But inflation has kicked in since then and there are no guarantees.View Deal

Echo Dot (4th Gen): was £49.99 now £19.99 at Argos
Amazon’s previous generation Echo Dot smart speaker is back on sale with a £30 saving – that makes it the cheapest we’ve seen it.
