Kevin De Bruyne was taken off after suffering an injury during the first half of Manchester City’s Premier League game against Tottenham.
The midfielder lost his balance as he tried to fire an effort on goal and immediately sat down holding his left leg after kicking the ball out of play.
He received treatment from City’s medical team before being replaced by Fernandinho in the 38th minute, heading straight down the tunnel.
City were leading 1-0 at the time, courtesy of Phil Foden’s fifth-minute opener.
Gary Neville, who was on commentary duty at the Etihad, said: “‘That is a blow, but it’s what happens when you play Champions League on a Wednesday then Saturday lunchtime.
“De Bruyne was outstanding at Crystal Palace as well last Sunday, he’s played Sunday, Wednesday, Saturday lunchtime, it’s just taken its toll it looks like.”
De Bruyne has endured a frustrating campaign after suffering a serious ligament injury to his right knee back in August, before hurting his left knee on his return to action against Fulham in November.
But the Belgium international has started 10 of City’s last 12 matches after returning from a thigh injury in March.
It remains to be seen whether or not De Bruyne will be available for City’s next match, away at Manchester United on Wednesday night, live on Sky Sports.
